The passage of time and exposure to the elements can take its toll on our bodies in many ways, but few are as noticeable as the changes and damage to our skin. These changes can include uneven skin tone. In our youth, our skin has a consistency of color and texture. When that changes, blemishes, discoloration, and differently appearing coloration can make us feel uncomfortable or unattractive. Fortunately, there are several natural ways to even out skin tone from home.
What Causes Uneven Skin Tone?
One of the biggest reasons for uneven skin tone is melanin. A vital shield against damaging ultraviolet rays, melanin also provides our skin and hair with its color pigment. When our bodies produce too much melanin, however, it can lead to changes in skin tone that appear inconsistently over our bodies and faces.
Other causes of uneven skin tone include:
- Sun exposure
- Hormonal changes
- Medical condition
- Dietary deficiency
- Genetic factors
How to Even Out Skin Tone Naturally
While we may not be able to completely return our skin to all of its youthful glory, uneven skin tone can be attacked with simple, natural treatments from home. Here are four all-natural ways you can start to even out your skin tone today:
- Cooled green tea bags. Green tea is so much more than a soothing and relaxing beverage. It is full of powerful antioxidants, which play a crucial role in minimizing inflammation throughout our bodies. These anti-inflammatory properties can also be an effective tool in evening out skin tone. Try applying cooled green tea bags to dark areas of your skin and leave resting for about 15 minutes.
- Lemon juice. Naturally acidic, lemon juice applied directly to the skin can help exfoliate your skin and enhance its tone. Squeeze the juice out of a lemon into a bowl, dip a cotton swab or ball into the juice, and apply to the skin. Let it sit for a few minutes, and then rinse your skin off with warm water. Be careful if you have sensitive skin, as lemon can be an irritant for some folks.
- Turmeric powder. Another natural anti-oxidant, turmeric can help even out your skin tone. Add some turmeric powder to lemon juice or almond oil and apply as described above.
- Water. When dehydrated, skin cells don’t function properly and lead to drying, flaking, tightness – and uneven skin tone. Over time, dryness causes wrinkling that could otherwise be averted. Nutritionists and doctors recommend individuals drink at least 64-oz – or 8 glasses – of water per day. But if you spend a lot of time in the sun or hit the gym frequently, you may need even more water. Skip the sodas when you’re thirsty, keep a water bottle on hand, and ease up on the alcohol, which can accelerate dehydration.
