Skin naturally sags and wrinkles over time – it’s an unfortunate side effect of the aging process. While some individuals are lucky enough to keep their skin looking fresh and full well into their lifetimes, many don’t have the luxury of a youthful appearance and seek outside treatment for wrinkles.
Fortunately, the severity of wrinkles can be minimized by maintaining a regular skin routine. And, often times, a well-rounded practice can help with signs of aging. Use the following tips to start your anti-aging routine at home.
Purchase a moisturizer
Without a moisturizer, it’s difficult for skin to maintain hydration. Dry skin can stretch easily, and this often leads to fine lines and wrinkles in the future. Heavy-duty moisturizers can fight wrinkles, but may be overwhelming for individuals just beginning their anti-wrinkle routine. Instead, a light moisturizer or lotion is beneficial if you’re new to the process. In addition, moisturizing your lips with a balm fights the side effects of aging on the mouth.
Water and nutrients
Just as you need to be hydrated on the outside, you must stay hydrated on the inside. Always drink eight, 8-oz glasses of water per day. Keep a reusable water bottle in your car, purse or backpack as a regular reminder to keep up with your water intake optimal. Nutrients, too, are vital to achieving a youthful appearance. Keep fresh fruits, veggies and whole grains in your cabinets instead of refined sugars and packaged foods.
A non-abrasive exfoliator is key for scrubbing off dead skin cells that can leave your face and décolletage looking dull. Once or twice a week is recommended, but scale back your exfoliation routine if you have sensitive skin, windburn or sunburn. In the winter, when skin’s dryness increases, exfoliation might become increasingly necessary. However, in the summertime, it might be more difficult to exfoliate with a tan or sunburn since the skin’s surface is already sensitive. Listen to your skin and don’t over-exfoliate or you might risk damaging the surface.
Many people fail to properly wear sunscreen, whether they believe a broad-spectrum lotion or spray with SPF prevents a glowing tan. Or, individuals might simply forget to incorporate sunscreen into their daily beauty routine. Nonetheless, sun safety is imperative. Aside from speeding up the aging process, prolonged sun exposure can lead to melanoma (skin cancer). Regularly check yourself for signs of melanoma and contact a dermatologist if you spot any of the associated symptoms. For tanning enthusiasts, sunless tanners are an optimal alternative to baking all day. Plus, faux tans are no longer the orange, streaky mess they once were – as long as you apply them correctly.
