If your eyes are staring at the ceiling in the middle of the night instead of closed during a restful sleep, it will show in the morning. Those eyes will probably have dark circles under them, and your insomnia or sleep deprivation is the likely culprit. A lack of sufficient sleep is a major reason for the development of these unsightly circles, and sleeping well and long enough can help reduce them. But a lack of sleep isn’t the only reason under-eye circles develop, and if shut-eye isn’t fixing the problem, you may need to consider other factors and ways to address the issue.
Why Does Lack of Sleep Cause Dark Circles?
The skin under your eyes is some of thinnest in your body. That means whatever is going on under the surface is likely to be visible above. When you don’t get enough sleep, the blood vessels and capillaries under your eyes may dilate, creating a dark tint. This may also cause them to appear puffy, as fluids can leak out into the skin.
If a lack of sleep is causing your dark circles, the best way to fix the problem is obvious: get more sleep. But if you need a quick fix, you can put a damp, cool tea bag under each eye for a few moments. The tannic acid in tea leaves helps some of the fluid to retract and the capillaries to shrink.
Other Reasons for Dark Circles
As noted, however, tossing and turning is not the only reason dark circles can develop. In addition to lack of sleep, other potential causes for the dark circles you see in the mirror could be:
- Heredity. Genetics play a big role in dark circles and unfortunately cannot be prevented, only treated.
- Allergies. Congestion leads to blood vessel dilation, which leads to a darker look underneath the eyes. Similarly, hay fever or contact dermatitis caused by an allergic reaction can have the same effect.
- Poor Diet. Lack of adequate nutrition can have a devastating effect on your skin and as well as your overall health. Iron deficiency, in particular, decreases the flow of oxygen in your blood, stifling the tissues underneath the eyes.
While temporary dark circles can be relieved by getting to bed earlier, de-stressing your schedule or shifting poor eating habits, some dark circles can’t be cured at home.
