The number of people who make new year’s resolutions is exponentially higher than the number of people who make good on these annual promises to themselves. By mid-January, ambitious commitments to eat better, work out more, stop bad habits, or improve oneself in other ways may already be out the window. If you want to make new year’s resolutions you can
If you want to improve the tone, texture, and appearance of your skin in 2019, you can of course avail yourself of the many excellent treatment options we offer here at Dr. Mariano Busso’s Miami-Coconut Grove aesthetic dermatology clinic, from dermal fillers to Botox to HydraFacials and more. But let’s start with three basic pledges you can make and keep beginning on Day One of the new year.
- Drink More Water
Your skin, like your body, is mostly water. Without water, skin cells don’t function the way they should leading to drying, flaking and overall tightness. As years go by, dryness causes wrinkling that could you could otherwise avoid. Nutritionists and doctors recommend that adults drink at least 64 ounces – or eight glasses – of water per day. If you spend a lot of time in the sun or exercise frequently and intensely, you may need even more water. Skip the sodas when you’re thirsty, keep a water bottle on hand, and ease up on the alcohol, which can accelerate dehydration.
- Clean Up Your Make-Up Kit
When was the last time you cleaned up your make-up kit, tools, and products? If you can’t remember, it’s been way too long. Bacteria can develop in your products, and that bacteria can make its way to your face when you apply makeup. The bacteria then causes inflammation, clogged pores, acne breakouts, and dullness.
Get rid of any products you’ve had for more than a year. Mascara and liquid eyeliners should be replaced every three months, while lip gloss and lipstick should be thrown out every six months. Foundations applied with a clean brush or sponge (and not double-dipped) can last about a year. Once you’ve cleaned out your makeup case, let makeup brushes soak in warm, soapy water to remove product and bacteria buildup. Clean tweezers and scissors with antibacterial soap, alcohol or hydrogen peroxide.
- Try to Relax
Our lives are filled with stress. Unfortunately, feeling constant stress can be devastating to your skin (and your heart, and your hair, and your weight…). Our bodies react to stress by producing increased amounts of cortisol and other hormones. These substances cause us to sweat more in stressful situations. Unfortunately, cortisol also comes with traces of testosterone which boosts oil production and leads to more acne breakouts.
In addition to acne, too much stress can cause other damage to your skin and worsen any skin conditions you may already have, including:
- Fever blisters
Find a way that works for you to reduce the amount of stress you feel in 2019. That could mean exercise, yoga, therapy, or just more sleep. However you do it, you’ll be doing your skin a huge favor.
