If you spend a hot summer day in Miami out on the beach or elsewhere in the sun, you know that you need to stay hydrated. If you fail to drink enough water to replenish what your body is losing to the heat, your fun day can quickly turn sour. We all need to be vigilant against dehydration in the summer, and that includes taking care of our skin.
The hot summer sun can wreak havoc on our skin, drying it out and causing all types of problems. Signs that your skin may be dehydrated include flakiness, cracks, redness, and itchiness.
To combat dehydrated summer skin, keep these simple solutions in mind:
Water, Water, Water
Drink water. Your skin, like your body, is mostly water. When dehydrated, skin cells don’t function properly and lead to drying, flaking and overall tightness. Over time, dryness causes wrinkling that could otherwise be averted. Nutritionists and doctors recommend individuals drink at least 64-oz – or 8 glasses – of water per day. But if you spend a lot of time in the sun or hit the gym frequently, you may need even more water. Skip the sodas when you’re thirsty, keep a water bottle on hand, and ease up on the alcohol, which can accelerate dehydration.
Apply a heavy body lotion or cream all over your entire body. Go fragrance-free if you suffer from skin sensitivities, such as rosacea or body acne. For the face, neck and chest area, use an anti-aging heavy moisturizer that adds hydration and fights wrinkles. Body oils can also promote skin hydration, but shouldn’t be used on areas prone to breakouts or inflammation.
Consider using tinted moisturizers, which are perfectly suited for warm, humid days. They are as light as moisturizer while still providing a solid base like foundation. They contain a combination of botanical extracts, antioxidants, and vitamins C and E, and many tinted moisturizers add sunscreen or anti-wrinkle cream into the mix as well. Hydrating, invigorating, and healthy – tinted moisturizers are a perfect addition to your beach bag this summer.
Hydrating Creams and Serums
You can complement the moisture you are providing to your skin internally through water consumption with topical moisture-rich creams and serums. Dr. Busso offers his patients topical treatments to help counteract skin dehydration, including the renowned Obagi® Nu-Derm System. Obagi’s Hydrate cream soothes flaky, chapped skin while minimizing fine lines and wrinkles for a more youthful appearance. In addition, the Nu-Derm system treats redness, sallowness and hyperpigmentation. Clinical skincare products like the Nu-Derm system are stronger than drugstore alternatives, so you’re likely to see symptoms fade faster when you consult a qualified physician for dry skin treatments.
Of course, no summer skin care regimen is complete without ample, regular and proper use of sunscreen. No matter what the season, Dr. Mariano Busso can help you keep your skin hydrated and healthy.
