The late, great Robin Williams once said that “Spring is nature’s way of saying ‘Let’s party!’” You may feel the same way about the warming temperatures, increasingly abundant sunshine, and more time spent outdoors. But that Spring Fever may cool a bit if you are suffering from “spider veins” or feel uncomfortable and insecure about the appearance of your legs. After all, spring and summer mean shorts, skirts, and swimsuits.
If varicose of spider veins are a problem, you could spend those seasons covering up and feeling bad about it. But you don’t need to keep your warm weather clothes in the drawer. At Dr. Mariano Busso’s Miami aesthetic dermatology clinic, we offer spider vein treatments that can have your legs Spring-ready in no time.
Time-tested, perennially popular, and highly effective, sclerotherapy is the go-to varicose and spider vein treatment for millions of people every year. Sclerotherapy involves treating unsightly leg veins by injecting a sclerosant solution into the damaged veins, which causes the veins to eventually collapse and become absorbed into the bloodstream. This safe procedure can be performed in your doctor’s office and takes less than an hour.
Anesthesia is not needed for sclerotherapy, during which patients only experience a mild burning sensation. After the skin is cleaned with an antiseptic solution, the sclerosant is injected into the affected veins with a very fine needle. The number of injections per session varies based on the number and length of the damaged veins. After the sclerotherapy procedure, cotton balls and compression tape are applied to the injection site(s).
After sclerotherapy, most patients can immediately return work and other day-to-day activities the very same day. Exercise and other strenuous activities, however, should be avoided for 7 to 10 days. Compression bandages may need to be worn for a few days after the procedure, and some patients may experience mild bruising and pigmentation following sclerotherapy; these side effects usually subside within a few days.
The results of sclerotherapy are usually fully visible after 3 to 6 weeks. Most patients are satisfied with the results. To preserve the results of sclerotherapy, patients should maintain an active, healthy life after the procedure.
Ellipse Laser Therapy for Spider Veins
While sclerotherapy is a wonderful treatment for spider veins, we also offer an alternative way to get your legs looking good. Ellipse Laser treatment effectively minimizes veins and venous lakes, which appear as small pools of blood trapped beneath the skin.
To decrease leg veins, the Ellipse Laser sends energy into the blood and vessel walls, leading to complete or partial collapse of the unwanted vein, the same process that occurs in sclerotherapy. The constricted vessel then degenerates, and visible leg veins reduce.
No matter which treatment option you and your doctor think is best for your needs, we can help you get your legs ready to say, “Let’s party!”
