From drying gently to brushing properly, the following tips from Dr. Busso are sure to help prevent breakage of hair. Review the tips below, and let us know what you think in the Comments section at the end of this article!
Preventing Hair Breakage
1. Do not vigorously dry your hair with a towel.
Consider: Wet hair is more elastic than dry hair, which makes it more likely to break. Instead of rubbing your hair dry, simply absorb the water by wrapping your hair in a towel. Alternatively, you may let your hair air dry.
2. Avoid brushing or combing your hair when it is wet.
Hair breaks more easily when wet. Handle wet hair as little as possible. It’s the opposite for people who have tightly curled or textured hair, or are of African descent. They should brush or comb their hair when it’s wet to decrease the chance of hair breakage.
3. Do away with the “100 strokes a day” rule.
This can cause split ends, so keep brushing to a minimum.
4. Avoid “combing through” hair products.
Combing after applying gels, hairspray or styling products that promise a long lasting hold causes the hair to break and can lead to significant hair loss. Reduce the use of these products to minimize loss of hair.
5. Avoid excessive use of blow dryers, curling irons, or flat irons.
Excessive heat can damage all types of hair. Let your hair partially air dry before you style or comb. Decreasing the number of times per week that you blow dry also helps limit the damage. Flat irons should be used on dry hair, on low or medium heat setting. They should be used occasionally no more than every other day. If you use a curling iron only leave it in place for a second or two.
6. Let your hair down.
Wearing braids, cornrows, a ponytail or hair extensions can cause hair loss. If you like these hair styles, remember to let your hair down at the end of the day to avoid breakage and damage.
