When Should I Start an Anti-Aging Skin Care Routine?

Dr. Mariano Busso - Miami Cosmetic Dermatologist, Aesthetic Dermatology Posted on March 18, 2019 by drbussoMarch 15, 2019

anti-aging skin careWhen we’re in our 20s, with decades of work and life ahead of us, most of us don’t spend a lot of time thinking about retirement. But just because the golden years seem light-years away doesn’t mean that you can’t start planning ahead by putting some money in a 401(k) or IRA. Similarly, it can seem odd to think about an anti-aging skin care routine at a young age. But just as starting to save money early on will leave you with more cash down the road, starting an anti-aging regimen sooner rather than later will give you the best chance of keeping your skin healthy and youthful-looking long into the future.

That said, no age is too old to start taking steps to protect and preserve your skin’s appearance. Here are some fundamental anti-aging skin care steps you can take as you go through life:

Twenties

In your 20s, the biggest threat to your skin’s long-term prospects is damage from the sun’s harmful UV rays. These rays do more skin damage than almost any other factor, so the sooner you get in the habit of generously using a broad-spectrum sunscreen every time you spend time outside, the longer you can enjoy your current youthful appearance. Keep your face clean and eliminate pollutants, grime, and cosmetic residue by washing your face twice a day, and add a good moisturizer to your bedtime routine to keep your skin hydrated.

Thirties

By the time they reach their 30s, most people will start to notice the development of flaws and imperfections that are a natural part of the aging process. These include wrinkles and lines on the forehead and around the eyes and lips caused by years of repetitive movements. At this point in life, it will take a bit more effort to minimize the visibility and prominence of these flaws. You can go a long way towards accomplishing that goal by adding retinol to your anti-aging regimen.

Also known as vitamin A, retinol is a powerful antioxidant that can address a wide range of issues associated with aging skin, such as uneven skin tone, bumps, enlarged pores, fine lines, and wrinkles. Vitamin A can also enhance your skin’s luminosity and make it feel tighter and firmer. Moisturizers, creams, serums, and other retinol-rich products can be easily found at your corner drug store or online.

Forties and Fifties

By this point, you’ll want to be more aggressive in your anti-aging efforts. Increase your intake of vitamins C and E either through food or supplements. Vitamin E helps boost your body’s diminishing collagen production which in turn helps reduce the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines, and age spots. Vitamin C aids with regulating the synthesis of collagen proteins to sustain firmness and stability, provides photoprotection by preventing and treating ultraviolet (sun) damage, and promotes the synthesis of barrier lipids, which reduce hydration and moisture loss

How to Wear Spring Makeup Like a Pro

Dr. Mariano Busso - Miami Cosmetic Dermatologist, Aesthetic Dermatology Posted on April 24, 2017 by drbussoApril 21, 2017

spring makeupWarm spring weather and heavy makeup simply cannot coexist. Who wants to deal with constant reapplications, only to have makeup wipe away on collars and clothes at the end of the day? The spring makeup struggle can be frustrating and even embarrassing.

We set out to inform our readers and clients on how to sport a flawless spring makeup look. Check out our top tips that’ll have you looking fresh, no matter the forecast.

When in Doubt, Wear Waterproof

If you don’t want your mascara running halfway down your face mid-day, wear a waterproof formula that’s guaranteed to last as part of your spring makeup routine. The same goes for eyeliners and lipsticks. Bear in mind, moisture-resistant makeup does not wipe off easily – even with your trusty facial cleanser and washcloth in tow. Always use an eye makeup remover that’s gentle enough for delicate skin. To go the all-natural route, remove makeup easily with a dab of coconut oil and a few cotton swabs.

Opt for Light Coverage

“Alphabet creams” are hybrids between lightweight tinted moisturizers and standard foundations that fit perfectly into any spring makeup look. Unlike the former, they tend to last longer and provide better coverage that won’t vanish easily. Beauty balm (BB) creams launched in Asia and have since gained popularity within the American market, predominantly because of their unique ability to enhance your complexion for the long haul. BB creams typically incorporate skin care benefits such as anti-aging peptides, vitamins and antioxidants, broad spectrum sunscreens, anti-inflammatory agents and make up primers. Meanwhile, color-correcting (CC) creams offer similar skin health pros specifically designed for individuals who struggle with redness caused by rosacea or other inflammatory skin conditions.

Use a Sunless Tanner

Want coverage that’s guaranteed to stay put for at least a few days? Sunless tanners formulated for facial wear are a great way to keep your glow going from day-to-night. Always test a new brand on a small, discreet patch of skin before you slather across your body. Keep in mind, faux tanning creams and bronzers do not offer adequate sun protection. You’ll still need a broad-spectrum sunscreen to defend against the tell-tale signs of aging and worse, skin cancer. For a natural-looking glow that doesn’t appear orange or streaky, follow Dr. Busso’s how-to guide on the best sunless tanner application.

Practice “Baking”

If you haven’t heard of “baking” your make-up, now’s the time to hop on this celeb-inspired makeup trend. After you’ve applied concealer underneath your eyes, let translucent powder sit on your face for 10 minutes. Once you dust off the powder, you’re left with a flawless finish that protects against crinkling. Double your efforts by applying a lightweight eye cream before you conceal to minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Carry a travel-size powder in your bag or car to absorb oil buildup around your t-zone throughout the day.

With hotter temperatures on the horizon, lightening up your makeup routine to withstand the weather is a must. Whether you want to spring clean your skin care or cut-down on shaving with laser hair removal, Dr. Mariano Busso is here to help. 4 Tips to Get Glowing Skin

Dr. Mariano Busso - Miami Cosmetic Dermatologist, Aesthetic Dermatology Posted on March 6, 2017 by drbussoMarch 5, 2017

glowing skinEveryone wants glowing skin. Many face the constant battle against dryness, dullness and pesky breakouts. That fresh from the beach radiance doesn’t come easy, especially if you lack the proper tools and skin care insight needed to enhance your complexion. Many falsely believe a night cream or serum can revitalize their look, but glowing skin isn’t achieved with a single remedy. Rather, applying a multi-faceted approach is the key to a fresh and youthful face.

If you want to look more vibrant and boost your self-esteem, implement these four tips for glowing skin:

Glow from the Inside

Skin is the body’s largest organ, which means diet and nutrients have a major impact on your complexion. Skin needs hydration inside and out to stay supple and fresh. Drink at least 64 ounces of H20 everyday cleans out toxins that can otherwise cause blemishes and keep skin moisturized to prevent fine lines. Like dehydration, too much alcohol and/or caffeine dehydrates the skin and provokes inflammation. And, a high sugar diet deteriorates elastin and collagen more quickly, instigating premature aging and wrinkles. Upping your water intake while managing your booze, sugar and coffee consumption are the easiest ways to get glowing skin faster. Eating a well-rounded diet full of skin-enhancing nutrients – like Vitamin C, biotin and Vitamin D – minimizes free radical damage to encourage luminosity.

Exfoliate Regularly

Skin is continually regenerating itself, but as we age, the rejuvenation process slows down dramatically. Over time, dead skin cells on the surface start to accrue and elicit dullness. Unfortunately, dead skin cell build-up also clogs pores, putting you at a higher risk of blackhead and acne flare-ups. Clearing the skin and uncovering the youthful cells below the surface almost immediately creates a fresher appearance, but also helps your topical treatments reach their target easier. Depending on your skin’s sensitivity, a mildly abrasive exfoliant used a few times per week effectively sloughs of dead skin cells to reveal brighter skin. For a deeper clean, microdermabrasion is a minimally-invasive treatment that uses tiny particles to renew and brighten appearances.

Wear Sunscreen Religiously

You might think you need the sun to attain glowing skin, but the opposite is true. Over time, the sun’s harmful rays do more damage than good. Overexposure to ultraviolet rays leads to wrinkles, sun spots and, potentially, life-threatening conditions like melanoma skin cancer. The Skin Cancer Foundation estimates that in 2017, 87,110 new cases of invasive melanoma will be diagnosed with 9,730 being fatal. UVB rays damage the surface layer, causing painful and unpleasant sunburns, while UVA rays target the layers beneath the skin’s surface. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen every day, even when temperatures are cooler. Don’t forget to properly shield your lips with a sunscreen-infused balm. If you want summer-like glowing skin without sun damage and harmful side effects, use a sunless self-tanning cream or lotion.

Consider a PRP Facial

Platelet-rich plasma is derived from your own blood and concentrated down to create a power-packed formula for glowing skin. In a PRP facial procedure, Dr. Busso draws a small amount of blood from your arm and uses a processing centrifuge to extract platelets, white blood cells and growth factors. The PRP fluid is then placed into a micro-needle instrument which makes small punctures into your skin to fight fine lines, wrinkles and acne scarring. After one to three treatments, patients can expect to notice a restored and revitalized complexion. Because this procedure is minimally-invasive, the typical side effects range from mild swelling or bruising.

By adopting a healthier lifestyle, proper hydration, sun protection and revitalizing skin care treatments, glowing skin is a realistic endeavor. To learn more about minimally invasive procedures that can reverse the signs of aging and counteract dullness, schedule an appointment with Dr. Busso at 305-857-0144.

Why Vitamin C Is Amazing for Your Skin

Dr. Mariano Busso - Miami Cosmetic Dermatologist, Aesthetic Dermatology Posted on February 27, 2017 by drbussoFebruary 25, 2017

vitamin cWhen you think of Vitamin C, the first thing that probably comes to mind is a big glass of orange juice. Clementines, tangerines, Valencia oranges and other citrus fruits are rich in these ascorbic acids, helping to repair and regenerate tissues from the inside out. They also boost iron absorption to prevent anemia and is chock-full of antioxidants to avert cell damage – including the four types of skin cells located in the epidermis: keratinocytes, melanocytes, Merkel cells and Langerhans cells.

When administered topically or ingested orally, Vitamin C boosts skin health in the following ways:

  • Regulates the synthesis of collagen proteins to sustain firmness and stability
  • Provides photoprotection by preventing and treating ultraviolet (sun) damage
  • Promotes wound healing by limiting free radical damage, encouraging keratinocytes to strengthen skin’s outer layer
  • Promotes the synthesis of barrier lipids, which reduce hydration and moisture loss¹

Foods Rich in Vitamin C

The recommended daily dose for adults varies between 65 to 90 milligrams. One standard-sized orange delivers about half of recommended intake. Consider the foods that offer the most Vitamin C per serving:

In addition to changing up your diet or taking supplements, integrating Vitamin C into your skin care routine encourages a brighter, more youthful-looking complexion. When applied topically, it helps treat and prevent the symptoms of aging and hyperpigmentation, as outlined in a study on the Indian Dermatology Online Journal.² You can use serums, infused moisturizers, cleansers and facial sprays for direct absorption.

Looking to boost your skin’s Vitamin C intake to smooth out fine lines and wrinkles? Skinbetter Intensive Treatment LINES, available at Dr. Mariano Busso’s Miami clinic, offers a nourishing fusion of hyaluronic acids, soothing peptides, amino acids and Vitamin C to boost firmness, restore volume and revive dull coloration. how-can-you-combat-wrinkles-at-homeSkin naturally sags and wrinkles over time – it’s an unfortunate side effect of the aging process.
