Like a houseguest who just won’t leave no matter how many hints you make, a double chin can stick around no matter how much you exercise or how healthy your diet is. Many of us develop this common and frustrating imperfection as we age. Stubborn fat below the chin – called submental fat – is usually a matter of genetics, but that doesn’t mean you can’t do anything about it. You can get rid of that double chin of yours – without surgery or liposuction – and we can help.
Approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 2015, Kybella is a revolutionary, proven, safe, and non-invasive treatment that dramatically improves the profile and appearance of moderate to severe accumulation of submental fat below the skin. Our own Dr. Mariano Busso was among the first physicians in the United States to introduce Kybella to patients and has treated of hundreds of patients, creating outstanding results and leaving patients with dramatically improved profiles.
What is Kybella and How Does It Get Rid of a Double Chin?
Deoxycholic acid is a natural compound found in human bile which helps break down fat by destroying the membranes of fat cells. Kybella is a synthetic version of this fat-killing compound which works to destroy subcutaneous fat cells under the chin. In the digestive tract, deoxycholic acid kills fat cells which our bodies naturally eliminate over several weeks while surrounding tissues remain unaffected. The Kybella injected under the chin also follows the same path out of the body, getting metabolized and ultimately eliminated as waste.
Kybella Treatment
As noted, Kybella is injected under the chin. How many treatments and injections you will undergo depends on the quantity of submental fat you want to lose and the chin profile you desire. One to five treatment sessions, each five to ten minutes long and usually spaced a month or so apart, are typically required. Each session involves the injection of one to two vials of Kybella.
The most common minor side effects some patients experience after a Kybella injection include temporary swelling, numbness, pain, redness, bruising, and areas of hardness in the treatment area. Any such side effects will typically peak a day after the treatment but can last from two days to three weeks.
Since Kybella completely kills fat cells, the effects of the treatment should be permanent. Patients typically do not require retreatment, and many patients see visible contouring after just two sessions.
