No one is immune to stress. Some manage their tension better than others, but day-to-day life is full of things big and small that can cause us to be on edge and anxiety-ridden. Stress doesn’t just cause problems in the mind, though. Elevated stress levels contribute to numerous physical health problems, including heart disease, obesity, gastrointestinal issues, and diabetes. No part of the body is immune from the effects of mental anguish – including your skin.
Stress can cause many skin problems, both temporary and long-term. When we feel stressed, our bodies react by producing increased amounts of cortisol and other hormones. These substances are what cause us to perspire more in strenuous situations. Unfortunately, cortisol also comes with traces of testosterone, which boosts oil production. The excess oil on your skin is a driving factor behind unsolicited acne.
In addition to acne, too much worry can cause other damage to your skin and worsen any skin conditions you may already be fighting, such as:
- Fever blisters
The same culprit – cortisone – also causes dry skin, which, in turn, leads to wrinkles and damage. The wrinkles on our face are often prompted or exacerbated by repetitive expressions and reactions. Think about when you feel stressed. Do you furrow your brow, purse your lips, or have some other regular facial reaction to stressful situations? If you do those things enough and on a regular basis, wrinkles and other undesirable imperfections are likely to develop.
Finally, when we are stressed for extended periods of time, we may tend to neglect our health; eating poorly, not making time for exercise, sleep deprivation, and failing to take good care of our skin. The irony is that the opposite of all of those things – healthy nutrition, regular exercise, sufficient sleep, and an attentive skin care regimen – are some of the very ways we can reduce stress and minimize any stress-related damage to our skin.
