Injectable Dermal Fillers Guide

Injectable Dermal Fillers Guide

When it comes to minimally invasive cosmetic procedures, there is little question that Botox remains the king. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, Botox treatments made up almost half of the 15.7 million minimally invasive cosmetic procedures performed in 2017. But the second-most-popular treatment was dermal filler injections, with 2.69 million procedures performed that year, up three percent from 2016.

What Do Dermal Fillers Do?

It’s not hard to understand why dermal fillers continue to grow in popularity. In addition to being minimally-invasive, quick, safe, and proven, these injectables are powerfully effective at addressing a range of common facial imperfections. Dermal fillers can:

  • Counteract the volume loss that is a natural part of the aging process and a primary cause of wrinkles
  • Restore fullness to flat or sunken cheeks and temples
  • Reduce prominent vertical lip lines
  • Smooth out creases and furrows in the chin
  • Improve the general contours of the face

What Are Dermal Fillers and How Do They Work?

There are many kinds of FDA-approved dermal fillers, and these gel-like substances are composed of three main types of substances:

  • Hyaluronic Acid (HA): Fillers made of this naturally occurring substance include Juvéderm Voluma, Juvéderm Volbella, Restylane®, Restylane® Silk, and Restylane® Defyne
  • Calcium Hydroxylapatite (CaHA): Fillers using this natural substance include Radiesse®
  • Poly-L-lactic Acid: This biocompatible and biodegradable synthetic substance is used in Sculptra Aesthetic® injectable fillers

Dermal fillers work by attracting water to the injection site and jumpstarting collagen production at and around the treatment area. Along with a related protein called elastin, collagen is the substance which gives our skin a healthy texture and shape.  Increasing the amount of collagen in your skin will improve your skin’s volume and texture. In combination with the filler itself, this boost in collagen production increases the volume of the area under the skin, stretching it and thereby reducing and fading wrinkles.

What is the Treatment Like?

Dermal filler procedures can last from 15 to 45 minutes, and patients can go home immediately after the treatment. While there may be some discomfort during or immediately after dermal filler injections, the procedure is largely painless as most fillers are infused with lidocaine to help minimize tenderness. Fillers typically remain in the skin for six to 18 months, with the improvement in your appearance lasting for the same duration.

Refresh Your Appearance in Time for Thanksgiving

Dr. Mariano Busso - Miami Cosmetic Dermatologist, Aesthetic Dermatology Posted on October 29, 2018 by drbussoOctober 26, 2018

Refresh Your Appearance in Time for ThanksgivingThanksgiving is less than a month away. Whether you are planning to jet across the country to see family or are hosting a gaggle of your loved ones at your home, there is a lot to do to get ready. You’ll be spending quality time with family, friends, and loved ones you may not see all that often, so you want to create the best impression you can. In addition to preparing a delicious meal, you’ll want to prepare your appearance for when that front door opens.

At Dr. Mariano Busso’s Miami aesthetic dermatology clinic, we offer several quick, safe, and effective treatments that can help you refresh your appearance in time for Thanksgiving. Consider adding one or more of these options into your pre-turkey day planning:

Dermal Fillers

While Botox treatments address lines, wrinkles, and other imperfections by targeting the muscles responsible for causing them, dermal fillers work by plumping facial features to counteract volume loss that is a natural part of aging and a primary cause of wrinkles.

Like Botox, dermal fillers are injected into the skin. Unlike Botox, dermal filler injections tend to address issues in the lower two-thirds of the face, plumping facial features such as the cheeks, lips, chin, and other areas.

Dr. Busso offers a wide array of dermal filler treatments, including:

  • Juvéderm Voluma
  • Juvéderm Volbella
  • Restylane®
  • Restylane® Silk
  • Restylane® Defyne
  • Sculptra Aesthetic®
  • Radiesse®
  • Silikon™ 1000

Dermal fillers typically remain in the skin for six to 18 months. They work by attracting water to the injection site and increasing collagen production at and around the treatment area. In combination with the filler itself, these effects increase the volume of the area under the skin, stretching the skin and thus reducing and fading wrinkles.

Dark Circle Reduction

Chemical peels can be extremely effective at reducing dark circles around the eyes. Chemical peels remove damaged outer layers of skin to reveal fresh, smoother skin which hasn’t been damaged by the sun, wind, or other elements. One of the three main types of chemical peels Dr. Busso administers involves the use of trichloroacetic acid (TCA). TCA peels can rejuvenate the skin below the eyes and reduce the prominence of the dark circles that appear under our eyes as we age.

Hand Rejuvenation

The hand rejuvenation program we offer is a restorative treatment that combines dermal fillers like those discussed above with laser treatments to replace lost volume and improve the overall appearance of your hands. Laser treatments work with the dermal filler to enhance the texture of the skin while minimizing sun spots and other unwanted blemishes.

This gallery shows before and after images of hands after being treated with our hand rejuvenation therapies. As you’ll see, the improvement is impressive, leaving patients with a pair of hands they will be happy to wave for years to come.
