Dermal filler injections are the second most common minimally invasive cosmetic procedures performed in the United States, exceeded only by Botox treatments, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. Americans received 2.69 million dermal filler injections in 2017, up three percent from 2016.
It’s no mystery why dermal fillers continue to grow in popularity. FDA-approved, safe, versatile, and largely painless, they work by counteracting the volume loss that is a natural part of the aging process and a primary cause of wrinkles and other imperfections.
We use many types of dermal fillers at Dr. Mariano Busso’s aesthetic dermatology clinic, but three of the most popular are versions of the filler Restylane®. Each Restylane product – Restylane, Restylane Silk, and Restylane Defyne – is specially formulated to address different skin imperfections.
All three Restylane injections share a common DNA, but there are some differences between them. Here is the scoop on the types of Restylane treatments we offer:
Restylane is a dermal filler that restores volume to the skin, lifting and smoothing wrinkles and other fine lines. These injections are frequently used to treat the glabellar lines between the forehead and the nasolabial folds. We also use Restylane in procedures such as Facial Contouring, Cheek Augmentation, Neck Rejuvenation, Hand Rejuvenation, Ear Lobe Rejuvenation, Nose Recontouring, and Chest/Cleavage Rejuvenation.
Restylane’s active ingredient is hyaluronic acid. This naturally existing sugar molecule can be found in almost every living organism. In the human body, hyaluronic acid serves several important functions, including lubricating body joints, helping transport nutrients, and maintaining hydration within the skin.
What makes hyaluronic acid-based fillers like Restylane products so popular is that they are composed of a natural molecule that is already present in our skin, which maximizes compatibility and minimizes the chances of an adverse reaction. This makes Restylane particularly attractive to first-time patients.
Restylane Silk is the first and only FDA-approved treatment specially formulated to treat lips and the lines around them. This product is designed for precise lip shaping and for smoothing lines around the mouth to create a natural and youthful look. Restylane Silk and Restylane share the same main ingredient, hyaluronic acid, but Restylane Silk’s hyaluronic acid particles are smaller and smoother. This makes Silk ideal for giving smooth shape to the lips and surrounding areas.
Restylane Defyne was formulated to smooth out deep laugh lines (nasolabial folds and marionette lines). Using proprietary XpresHAn Technology™, this FDA-approved gel allows for elasticity and lasting support. The results are natural-looking, safe, and tailored to an individual patient’s needs and goals.
Studies show that for most patients, Restylane Defyne provides significant improvement to wrinkle severity for up to a year. The studies, relied upon by the FDA in approving the product, found that 77 percent of Restylane Defyne patients saw at least a one-grade improvement on the Wrinkle Severity Rating Scale (WSRS) after only six weeks.
